Let’s Talk Science…
When it comes to a woman’s period, there is more to play in the body than just monthly bleeding. Menstruation is not only a natural event but a necessary one. There are many benefits to our monthly bleeding, so here is a quick dive into the most important ones!
1. It slows down the aging process
Believe it or not, it’s true! Because we bleed every month, we lose iron through our blood. Iron is critical to the production of free radicals, which increase our chances of developing age-related diseases. As a result, it is recommended that men donate blood every two months to dispose of their iron, a process that is already in place for women!
2. It gives you valuable information about your health
We have all heard (or experienced) how stress and our hormones can affect our period. When our period is off (whether that’s bleeding more or less, cramping, PMS-ing, or other signs) it’s our body’s way of telling us that something isn’t right. The female body has this incredible, built in system, to let us know what we are deficient in (in terms of nutrients) or what we might be getting too much of. 3. Increased energy
When we are menstruating regularly, that means that our hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone) are in balance. When our hormones are balanced we have more energy and more controlled emotions.
4. Working out can help your period and vice-versa
If you experience mood swings, fatigue or cramping in the days leading up to your period or during your period, exercise can help! Endorphins are released when you exercise, which are natural painkillers and lead to happier emotions. Studies have also found that when female hormones are lower (as in the first two weeks of your menstrual cycle), you are able to experience greater strength and power gains in your workouts.
5. Pregnancy, or not
As silly as it may sound, getting our period is a way for us to know if we are (or aren’t) pregnant! Depending on your situation this can be a positive or negative experience!
6. Emotional well-being
When we get our period, it is an opportunity for us to look inward and take some self-care time. Often during the days before/after our period we are more inclined to slow down and do things that feel good for us.
So if you’re still on the fence about whether or not to LOVE your period, remember that it serves a purpose. Your period does not only come with health benefits and signs of a healthy body, but it’s also NORMAL!
